First is the conscious mind.  The ego is the term given to the organisation of the conscious mind, being composed of conscious perceptions, memories, thoughts, and feelings [Calvin S. Hall & Vernon J. Nordby, A primer of Jungian Psychology, p.34 (1973,  New American Library)].
Those mental contents that the ego does not recognise fall into the Personal Unconscious.  The Personal Unconscious is made up of suppressed and forgotten memories, traumas, etc.  All psychic contents which are either too weak to reach consciousness, or  which are actively supressed by the ego, because the latter is threatened by them.

Thus far Jung is in agreement with his old teacher Freud, in supposing the existence of the Unconscious mind, which includes all that is not immediately accessible to everyday waking consciousness (i.e. the  Conscious mind or Ego).  Conscious and Unconscious  are thus the two opposed parts of the psyche.

Jung’s great contribution however was to divide the Unconscious itself into two very unequal levels: the  more superficial Personal, and the deeper Collective, Unconscious.
Everyone has their own Personal Unconscious.   The Collective Unconscious in contrast is universal.   It cannot be built up like one’s personal unconscious is; rather, it predates the individual.  It  is the repositary of all the religious, spiritual,  and mythological symbols and experiences.  Its  primary structures – the deep structures of the  psyche, in other words – Jung called “Archetypes“; a  later-Hellenistic Platonic and Augustinian Christian  term that referred to the spiritual forms which are  the pre-existent prototypes of the things of the  material world.  Interpreting this idea psychologically, Jung stated that these archetypes were the  conceptual matrixes or patterns behind all our  religious and mythological concepts, and indeed, our  thinking processes in general.

Two Milwaukee police officers were shot Tuesday afternoon on the near south side by a bicyclist whom they had stopped, police said. A suspect was arrested a short time later.Both officers were shot more than once and were taken to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa. One was in critical condition and one was in satisfactory condition, Police Chief Edward Flynn said.
The two 2nd District officers – who were in uniform and driving a marked police van – were shot by the bicyclist before they could draw their weapons around 3:10 p.m. in the 800 block of S. 2nd St., police said.

Flynn identified the officers as Bryan Norberg, 21, on the force six months, who was in satisfactory condition, and Graham Kunisch, 26, with 15 months on the force, who was in critical condition. Both were expected to survive.

I want to explain to you the basic idea of renormalization in quantum field theory, and I want to say a bit about how it’s related to statistical mechanics. You won’t get the mathematical details here — for that, try something like Peskin and Schroeder’s book, “An Introduction to Quantum Field Theory”. Instead, I just want to give you a gut-level understanding of this stuff.
The basic idea is this: we can measure things like the charge and mass of particles by making them collide in particle accelerators. But if we do this, something strange and interesting happens: unless we take into account some complicated corrections, the answers will depend on how hard we slam them into each other! The reason, roughly, is that every particle is surrounded by a cloud of virtual particles — and the harder we slam two particles into each other, the deeper into this cloud we see.
That was very vague. To make it precise takes some work. To do it in a limited amount of time, I’m gonna assume you vaguely know what a Lagrangian for a quantum field theory looks like, and that you know how different terms in the Lagrangian correspond to different sorts of particle interactions, which can be drawn as “vertices” of Feynman diagrams.
That sounds pretty technical. Luckily, you won’t need to understand this stuff in any detail — if you’ve read Feynman’s cute little popular book called QED: Strange Theory of Matter and Light, you’re probably ready for what I’m about to say.
