Rod Nilsestuen, secretary of the Department of Agriculture,\u00a0Trade\u00a0and Consumer Protection, drowned yesterday while on vacation in Marquette, Mich., a\u00a0small town in the upper peninsula, when he told friends he was going for a swim in Lake Superior.<\/p>\n

Not long after that, witnesses\u00a0said, the 62-year-old was carried off by a wave.
\nHe had led DATCP\u00a0since 2003.<\/p>\n

In the summers he often volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, helping to build homes in northern Wisconsin and Michigan. Late Wednesday afternoon,\u00a0after he finished work on a house, he\u00a0went here, to Picnic Rocks, for\u00a0a swim before dinner.<\/p>\n

Witnesses saw him struggling off a sandbar, and emergency responders were called. Officials said his body was found floating about 300 yards offshore.<\/p>\n

“He\u00a0treated everyone that he met\u00a0like you were family,” Randy Romanski, deputy secretary for DATCP, said.<\/p>\n

He said the mood at the agency today was somber.<\/p>\n
